STEM for Her has supported the Girls in Technology (GIT) Sharing our Success (SOS) program as a signature initiative since its inception. SOS invites middle- and high-school girls across the D.C. metropolitan area to participate in an evening program of networking and STEM activities. The program also includes interactive demonstrations from exhibitors designed to inspire girls to explore the latest technologies and STEM-related careers, and a networking exercise to promote interpersonal communication skills. Program speakers, mentors and committee members volunteer their time to make a difference in the lives of our future generation.
Program Description and Results
Sharing our Success (SOS) generates awareness and nurtures girls’ interest in STEM. The girls hear from professional women in successful STEM careers, and participate in panel discussions and hands-on STEM activities. The 2016 programs were held at Visa in Loudoun County and at Booz Allen Hamilton in Washington, D.C. Through STEM for Her and corporate sponsorships, these events were free for girls in the Metropolitan area. SOS served approximately 300 girls in grades six through twelve in 2016.
"Before participating in the Northern Virginia GIT program and Sharing Our Success event, I never knew there were so many highly successful women in STEM companies. I was in awe of their accomplishments and they gave me such hope and excitement for my future in a STEM career." - Sharing Our Success Participant
