Each year, STEM for Her partners with a variety of local and global organizations to help young women pursue their futures in STEM fields. These programs are designed to introduce them to the breadth of opportunity in STEM and get them excited about engaging in STEM-specific careers. Since 2013, STEM for Her has supported the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) which focuses on discussing key issues with women leaders working in STEM policy.
Program Description and Results
From coding to medical breakthroughs to funding research, women are at the forefront of STEM innovation. The goal of PLEN’s Women in STEM Policy program is to discuss key issues with women leaders working in the increasingly significant STEM policy field. Each year, PLEN brings together between 45-50 college women from around the country to D.C. for a five-day seminar to discuss current issues in the field, build professional skills and hear from women leaders on the front lines of policymaking in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM for Her funding in 2016 provided the PLEN program general financial support and sponsored seven local women to attend the Women in STEM Policy event.
“I am an undergraduate junior studying biology at Trinity Washington University…and the (PLEN) experience changed my perception on policy work and has inspired me to pursue a career in the field." - 2016 PLEN conference attendee
